The Dynabook that will eat the world
Could Apple’s tablet announcement really be the incarnation of Alan Kay’s Dynabook?
More importantly, is Apple going to win the interface war? Jesus Diaz at Gizmodo (among many others) have posited that the desktop metaphor does not translate well to the mobile milieu.
And is the iPad, as J.S. McDougall predicted on HuffPo, a Kindle-killer?

Jan 1, 2010, 1:23 pmI did not know of the Dynabook. Very innovative concept.
The iPad is the first step toward the ultimate digital device. And yes, I think this gives Apple the same leg up in the interface war that the IBM-PC gave Microsoft in the early 80’s fight for desktop real estate.
But WHO THE HELL let that name ever get out of focus groups? The jokes are starting, and will be endless. It’s worse than the previous title-holder, the “Palm Pilot”. Does it come in “Maxi & Mini”? Does it have “wings”? Can you use it to go horseback riding, swimming and skiiing? Is the stylus called the iPon?”

Jan 1, 2010, 5:36 pmIt’s an iPod Touch with a big screen. Maybe it’s a better ebook reader than the kindle. Beyond that I don’t see much of a point to it. I’m sure Apple will sell a ton of them. I find the most interesting aspect to be the custom processor Apple developed for it.
